A Note from the Class of 1980
We are starting a fundraiser to help our dear friend Mary Mac(Class of 1980) get back on her feet. “We”, are a group of Mary’s “sisters”, founded some 40 years ago in the hallways of our high school, Dominican Academy in NYC. Our concern and love for Mary have been ever present (privately and on Facebook) as she faces the daily challenges of security and safety in the aftermath of the devastation on Tortola, her beloved home since 2009.
What Mary has endured in the last 2 months is unimaginable:
- August 7 – Mary’s apartment was completely flooded and its contents ruined (including precious personal belongings) after Tropical Storm 99L unleashed an unprecedented 17 inches of rain on the island.
- September 6 – Mary braved Hurricane Irma with friends. The island is decimated, leaving her Jeep severely damaged and her employment at risk.
- September 20 - Alone, Mary and her kitten Avocado experienced another round of destruction from Hurricane Maria, with apartment flooding and wind and debris endangering her home.
Like so many others, Mary is still without power or running water. Electricity will not be restored to her neighborhood for at least 6 months. Price gouging on essentials like gasoline, batteries, and even bank fees is rampant. Replacing even a minimal number of her personal items will be very costly due to high shipping costs and import duties.
People who have met Mary know she has one of the biggest hearts matched only by her laugh and her smile. Even as she deals with the enormity of her own losses, she suffers with those who have lost so much more. In a recent exchange she writes “Sorry for being short, I have about a 5-minute window of WIFI right now and am trying to send a few urgent emails about a friend who we are helping to evacuate!”
Mary does not have the means to pay rent and buy a replacement vehicle. It is uncertain if the branch of her company will recover, so at the moment she has no job to go to. Collectively, her financial burden is insurmountable.
Every little bit helps, so please contribute whatever you can, and share this with anyone you think may be willing to help. All funds will go directly to Mary to provide for her day-to-day needs and rebuild what must start over.
“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” - Charles Dickens
Thank you and God bless.
