Our recent Zoom meeting for the Alumnae Association was a huge success! 17 alumnae represented classes ranging from 1963 to the 2000’s.
The first part of the discussion centered on alumnae engagement or involvement at D.A. Some graduates pointed out that they have very engaged classes, and have stayed in touch with their classmates, especially the classes from the 60’s and 70’s.
Another alumna, a woman of color, from the 90’s shared that she had not enjoyed her time at D.A. but has come to realize that without her D.A. education, she would not be where she is today. She also pointed out that she felt the minority experience was different and she described her experience with D.A. as a “love/hate” relationship.
A second alumnae remarked that D.A. must remember that the alumnae are human beings, not just sources of money.
The importance of the Class Representative to the success of alumnae relations was brought up. An alumnae expressed the importance of creating a template of what is expected of a Class Rep. We look to create the template in February.
We discussed various types of events that graduates would like to see. It was also suggested that we try to have events on different days or at various times of the day (e.g. lunchtime).
- More child/family friendly gatherings. D.A. had a block party in the early 2000’s and it was suggested as an idea.
- A basketball game between the current team and alumnae, possibly an event offsite.
- A Speaker/Lecture series was also suggested. D.A. is hosting an Estate Planning
- Seminar on May 6th – more details coming soon.
- An author talk / book series with D.A. alumnae featured authors.
- D.A. gatherings in various parts of the country was also suggested. I am happy to report that we are having an alumna gathering in Washington D.C. on February 5.
- Creating a professional networking page on the website.
How to stay in touch? We currently have a Facebook and Instagram page, and the D.A. website features an Alumnae section. LinkedIn was also mentioned as a valuable tool – we will explore adding LinkedIn. The idea of an Alumnae Directory either in print or online was discussed – we will consider reviving the Directory.
The 2024 Spring Auction & Benefit is on April 16th at the New York Athletic Club. The theme this year is Celebrating the Arts. We look to have performances by the Glee Club, Dance Club, and many student musicians. The proceeds will support our Arts Department as well as Cultural Experiences and Scholarships for students. Invitations are coming out in February – you can also buy 50/50 raffles for $100. All information can be found on the website under Alumnae Events.
The meeting ended on a very positive note as an alumna, who lives on the west coast, spoke about how great it was to be back at the school for her reunion and to share a table with educated strong women and the great conversations that were had.
The next meeting will be held in April, May or June, and the date will be posted soon.
Thanks to all who participated,
