Thanksgiving Celebration (PHOTOS) |
|
On Wednesday, November 22, Dominican Academy participated in its annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive sponsored by Campus Ministry. Every student donated canned and boxed goods (for all the traditional Thanksgiving trimmings), and each homeroom purchased turkeys and built and decorated two baskets. All 22 baskets will be given to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church located on West 51st Street, where they were distributed to families in need.
While two grades built baskets, the other two grades celebrated the 800th anniversary of Dominican cloistered nuns. Visiting nuns (Sr. Mary Grace and Sr. Mary of Jesus) from the Corpus Christi Monastery in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx left their cloistered lives momentarily to speak about being contemplative, Dominican history, and our shared Dominican values.
Immediately following, the entire Dominican Academy family proceeded to Thanksgiving Liturgy at the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer. The school continued the tradition of installing the new student Eucharistic Ministers at the Mass. These 8 special seniors have trained for 5 weeks with activities such as traveling to a soup kitchen to serve the poor, learning how to serve each other and spiritually preparing to enter into this new vocation.
